Whale Beach
This coastal renovation transformed an existing weatherboard pole home perched on the cliffs of Whale Beach. Designed by the architect-owner, every detail of this project required precision — both in execution and finish. Working on a steep and exposed site, we craned in excavation equipment to cut back into the rock face behind the house, allowing us to extend the service core, add new bathrooms, and install a full sub-surface drainage system. The cliff itself was stabilised using rock bolts and anchors to secure the surrounding boulders.
A new concrete pool with a waterfall edge was built into the front of the block, framed by wide timber decks and glass balustrades. Inside, the home was fully updated with custom joinery, a new air conditioning system, an upgraded stairwell, new glazing, and skylights to maximise views of the beach and headland. The restoration of the original — and often weather-worn — timberwork came up beautifully, with careful attention paid to waterproofing and sealing the home from the harsh easterly winds. Built for a designer with a sharp eye, this project demanded clean finishes, thoughtful detailing, and exacting sequencing at every stage.
