Mosman

This project involved the full renovation of a 100-year-old heritage home on a steep Mosman site. We rebuilt the lower floor, introduced new living spaces and a bedroom, and excavated by hand beneath the house to create a functional basement. The original convict-era sandstone undercroft — previously unusable — now houses a wine cellar, sauna, and storage room. Structural steel was installed to support the existing brickwork, sandstone, and tiled roof, allowing us to preserve the heritage features while adding strength and longevity.

Filtered ventilation runs through every room in the house, including the basement, with a custom-designed airflow system drawing warm, dry air from the roof cavity. The custom internal staircase — designed and built in-house — includes integrated air conditioning and allows for a future upper-level extension. A second external staircase, built from ironbark with steel handrails, connects to the backyard.

Outdoor living areas were completely reimagined. Recycled bricks from the original house were used to construct a built-in gas fireplace and laid in a herringbone pattern across the new entertaining terrace. Glazing and decking were added around the existing pool. A new north-facing balcony features operable roof louvres for sunlight control, while side-facing louvres — modelled in 3D — were carefully positioned to maintain harbour views while ensuring privacy for neighbouring properties. This 18-month build brought together heritage care, hands-on problem solving, and modern construction methods to deliver a home that’s both enduring and exceptional.
